Heavy equipment, heavy machinery, heavy earth moving equipment, demolition equipment, construction equipment, excavating equipment and etc. These are among the names given to the category of equipment which is commonly used in construction work sites.
The functions can be generalized into main categories like earth works, demolition, material handlings and construction. Many heavy equipment are designed to provides multiple functions. And thus, they are both essential and indispensable piece of equipment at the construction sites.
One of the most common piece of equipment found in construction site. Excavator has a long arm to reach far distance and perform earth moving with bucket attachment. Its functions, however, are more than just excavating, its function depends on what attachment its arm is equipped with. You have to choice to have wheels or tracks to move the excavator around depends on the landscape of the work site. The arm is attached to a cabin which can swivel 360 degree which makes excavator one of the most versatile piece of equipment among the heavy machineries.
Backhoe Loader (Backhoes)
Another piece of fundamental heavy earth moving equipment. As its name implied, it got a hoe attached to the back of the vehicle and a loading bucket at the front.
Backhoe loader is basically multi-purpose. One of its excellent function is to excavate trenches below the equipment level.
You are likely to see a backhoe loader in suburb area or whenever there is some road construction.
Bulldozer is a piece of heavy earth moving equipment that is really good at excavating the top layer. The vehicle is equipped with extra power and works like a BULL! It can also use to push materials around, such as soil, sand, rubbles, rocks, snow and etc. The removal of soil is done by the sharp edged wide metal plate provided at its front. This plate can be lowered and raised accordingly.
Bulldozer is sometimes also being called a crawler.
Motor grader or just grader. It contains a horizontal blade in between front and rear wheels and this blade is lowered in to the ground while working. Operating cabin is provided on the top of rear axle arrangement. It is commonly used to level the ground or to flatten the surface of soil before laying asphalt layer, to remove unnecessary soil layer from the ground etc.
It is not a strange equipment found in heavy snowing regions, motor grader is used to remove snow or dirt from the road.
Skid-Steer loader is the “tank” in heavy earth moving equipment category. They are small, nimble and extremely versatile. They can turn within their own footprints, making them ideal to work in confined space or in areas where construction activity has been finalized. The wheel is designed to minimize soil compaction making it perfect to work in finished area.
Skid-steer loader comes in different sizes and it can performs digging, drilling, compacting, log grappling, snow blowing, jack-hammering, and more, depends on what attachment is fitted to the loader.
What does a trencher do? Obviously, digging trenches!
These trenches are generally used for pipeline laying, cable laying, drainage purposes etc. Trenching machines are available in two types namely chain trenchers and wheeled trenchers. To excavate hard soil layers, wheeled trenchers are more suitable.
The trencher has a conveyor system that carries the excavated material and deposits it onto the ground next to the trench. Trenchers can use different digging implements depending on the depth of the trench and material being excavated.
Trencher can be wheeled or tracked.
Dump trucks are used in construction sites to carry the material in larger quantities from one site to another site or to the dump yard. Generally, in big construction site, off-road dump trucks are used.
Dump trucks come in many different sizes for different capacity and load needs, ranging from small utility-type trucks with dumping beds to enormous machines used in mining operations.
Wheel-tractor scraper or just, scraper. Scrapers are earth moving equipment used to provide flatten soil surface through scrapping. Scrapers are large heavy equipment designed for open areas, where they can run at high speeds for cut and fill operations. Large self-propelled scrapers are called motor scrapers. There are also smaller scrapers, called pull scrapers, that are pulled behind another vehicle.
Front part contains wheeled tractor vehicle and rear part contain a scrapping arrangement such as horizontal front blade, conveyor belt and soil collecting hopper.
When the front blade is lowered onto the ground and vehicle is moved, the blade starts digging the soil above the blade level and the soil excavated is collected in hopper through conveyor belt. When the hopper is full, the rear part is raised from the ground and hopper is unloaded at soil dump yard.
These are just a few of the heavy earth moving equipment commonly found, there are many more. The need for equipment depends on the sites and the tasks. Most importantly, the attachments to the heavy equipment too. By changing the attachments can actually expand the functions.
